Container Gardening as a Beginner

Container gardening has been such a joy and was a great way to start my gardening experience. I had been wanting to start my gardening journey for quite some time and decided that container gardening would be a great way to start considering I had no prior gardening experience. I did have some history with caring for potted plants and didn't really have the time this year to start an actual garden in the ground, so I knew this would be the best way to start.

Being from southern Alabama and growing up with a mother who has a green thumb, I have always loved flowers and always envisioned having a garden, a greenhouse, or a back porch filled with beautiful colorful foliage. I begin potting on my back porch a few years ago but decided this summer I would make a real effort to make my back porch like my own mini garden since it's convenient at the moment. I purchase a gardening tool set about two years ago from Target, because as previously mentioned, my plan was always to start a garden.

First, I purchased a knee pad, gardening tool set, boots, and the gloves to match. When I tell you I love it so much! It fits my personality and style very well. I also purchased some casual baggy linen overalls so I could feel as comfortable as possible while gardening.

I then purchased this gardener's logbook that I could track each plant, from its beginning, growing season, and more. This logbook allows me to note my journey and see what works vs what didn't work so I that I can learn from possible mistakes year after year.

To protect my head from extreme temperatures, I wear this beautiful sun hat that I purchased as a beach hat during my bachelorette festivities earlier this year. It comes in handy and I wear it regularly while I garden.

When it comes to container gardening, I chose containers with holes because drainage is pivotal. Containers can become clogged with water so I made an effort to purchase containers with drainage holes or containers with a punch hole available.

I first decided what containers and the color of the containers I would purchase. Flowers are easier to grow in large pots so I purchased them first. My first stop was Bealls Outlet, formerly known as Burkes Outlet. They are known to have a nice affordable selection of pots to choose from.

Walmart also has a really nice selection of containers to choose from and in a great variety of sizes. I chose to purchase the white plastic containers with drainage holes to provide water to drain. Because. Again. Drainage is critical! The containers I purchased has an option keep the hole closed or an option for you to drill your own hole.

For the soil, I chose an all purpose potting soil which can be used for a variety of plants. I also mixed my soil with miracle grow to provide my plants with the adequate nutrition since they would be growing inside a pot.

Container gardening is said to be one of the easiest ways to garden. You simply need to get some containers, potting soil, gardening tools, and choose what selection of plants you want to begin with. Another major advantage is that you get to choose the environment for your plants and you have the option to move them to another area, if that's what your plants need to thrive. Watering and drainage is also key to having a successful containing garden experience. I plan to add container vegetable gardening to my resume next year so stay tuned for a new post about that. Also stay tuned for a new post on my back porch makeover.
